0:23Yeah, so wind mitigation inspections are honestly one of the best kept secrets in real estate. A lot of people don't know about them, but they can make a huge difference in your insurance costs, especially here in Sarasota, where we're dealing with hurricane season

0:38and all that comes with it. Okay, so let me ask you this. What exactly is a wind mitigation inspection? Because I think a lot of people hear that term and have no idea what we're actually talking about.

0:50Great question. So basically, a wind mitigation inspection is when a certified inspector comes out to your home and evaluates all the features that help protect it from wind damage.

1:02We're looking at things like your roof, your roof covering, your windows and doors, your garage doors, the way your house is anchored to the foundation, all these structural elements that either make your home more vulnerable

1:15or more resistant to hurricane force winds. Oh, wow. So it's not just about whether your roof looks old or new, right?

1:22It's really a comprehensive look at the whole structure. Exactly. And here's the thing that blows people's minds. Once that inspection is done and you get the report, you can actually submit it to your insurance company.

1:36And based on what they find, your insurer can give you a discount on your premium. Sometimes we're talking about five, 10, even 15% off, depending on what improvements your home has.

1:47That's incredible. So you're saying if I just get this inspection done, I could potentially be saving hundreds of dollars a year on my insurance.

1:55That seems almost too good to be true. I know, right? It does sound too good to be true, but it makes total sense when you think about it from the insurance company's perspective.

2:06If your home is less likely to suffer wind damage, you're less likely to file a claim. So they're incentivizing you to make your home more resilient and they reward you with lower premiums.

2:18So what are some of the things that inspectors are typically looking for? Like what improvements actually make a difference? So the big ones are things like impact-resistant windows and doors, reinforced roof decking, proper roof-to-wall connections,

2:33and a properly installed and maintained roof covering. If your garage door is reinforced, that matters too. And then there's the foundation. If your home is properly anchored to the foundation with straps or bolts, that's huge.

2:48These are all things that make your home significantly more resistant to wind damage. I love that because it's not like you have to do all of these things, right?

2:57You could have just a couple of these features and still get a discount. Absolutely. Every feature counts.

3:03So even if you've only upgraded your windows to impact-resistant ones, that alone can qualify you for a discount. And here's what's smart.

3:11Some people use that discount savings to fund the next upgrade. It's like the insurance company is actually helping you make your home safer over time.
